Graduating GeolEng students J. Day, M.Kuuskman, and C.MacCallum won 2nd prize in the nationwide engineering report competition held by the Canadian Geotechnical Society. The report sums up their 4th Year Captone Geol. Eng. Design Project on degradation and remediation of railway ballast.

Dr. Guy Narbonne
was awarded the Queen's ASUS Barnes award for exceptional teaching.

The Engineering Geomechanics Graduate Students have returned from a very successful technical tour of Europe. The students saw over 50 sites of engineering and geological ingterest over 18 days.

Former PhD student
Dr. Kyle Larson, along with
Laurent Godin received the 2011 Dave Elliott prize for best paper, selected by the Geological Association of Canada, for his publication in TECTONICS on the Himalayan orogenic wedge.

For his groundbreaking research on the tectonic evolution of the Canadian Cordillera, Ray Price has been awarded the 2010 Massey Medal. administered by The Royal Canadian Geographical Society




Dr. Jean Hutchinson
has been inducted as a
Fellow of the
Engineering
Institute of
Canada.


Ph.d. candidate Cody Miller has been awarded the Bathurst Prize for presenting the best student paper at the 14th Bathurst Meeting of Carbonate Sedimentologists in Bristol, United Kingdom. His presentation dealt with lacustrine and palustrine carbonates preserved in microkarst cavities; Nullarbor Plain, southern Australia.

Dr. Mark Diederichs
has been awarded
the honour of
being the
2011 Cross Canada
Lecture Tour Speaker

for the Canadian Geotechnical Society.
Dr. Diederichs, a Geological Engineer, will present 15 lectures from coast to coast this April.




Michelle Thompson, an Geological Engineering student received the award for best research poster in the physical and earth sciences division at the Rising Stars of Research conference. More here.
